The New WDS Titles
How the AKC Stunts Breed Evolution by Discriminating…
In January of 2007, The AKC will be unveiling it’s new WDS( Working Dog Sport) titles. However the AKC is only allowing archetypical although extremely exclusive breeds to compete for these titles. This is extremely unfair for the other 168 breeds that are currently registered with this prestigious club. The AKC unknowingly stunts breed evolution by alienating the majority of breeds, that no longer have a skill to call their own.
Among the titles in this class will be titles for Drug Detection dogs, Bomb Detection, and Protection Dogs. Dogs that are used in national disasters, and to keep citizens safe every day….. Should not any dog be allowed the right to serve their country?? The AKC places the responsibility for eligibility of each breed solely in the hands of the breed parent clubs. However the AKC, has not sent out any sort of form for parent clubs to return if they should be interested. The AKC has breed favoritism in play in almost all of their working dog titles.
Among the many things that the AKC is giving out titles for in the WDS, there is, as of yet, no talk of a class for SAR or Cadaver Search. It is disappointing that the titles for conformational correctness have been in play for over a century,… yet the value of working merit, is just now clumsily being approached.
We must demand that every dog be given the right to excel and be titled in whatever job they perform best, regardless of breed... People breed dogs for lots of reasons. Even if the title is not concurrent with the reasons that a breed began, breeders and trainers should be encouraged to have a well rounded dog. If having a dog that can do what it was meant to do is remarkable, having a dog that can do that and many other jobs is awe inspiring.
