AKC     VS.  CoKC

I Have been asked time and time again, why register with the CoKC and not the AKC?.....

I guess for me it boils down to this. The AKC has a closed studbook. This means that there are a certain number of dogs that were entered in when the breed began, and has added very little to it. There is a lot of red tape involved with breeding to dogs in other countries, and dogs who are unregistered.

It is true that the dogs I started with, have all been AKC Siberian Huskies, all still are at this point. My aspiration for years to come, is to breed for performance and a maximum level of hetrosis, for a maximum level of hybrid vigor. For this I may use some AKC dogs, but the majority of the dogs that I am interested in breeding to are not AKC. The Dogs Mostly belong to CoKC and are registered as Seppala Siberian Sled Dogs, or are from other countries. This would obviously make CoKC my choice, for their no hassle registration. To register my puppies, I need not do more than pay for the stud to be registered.

This opens a whole new world for me as a breeder. I look forward to observing my puppies, that result from such out crossed matings. This will of course mean A.I. breedings for this generation, but I will be keeping all of the offspring, and posting the accomplishments.

I will begin competing in the future simply for fun (CoKC just happens to have races). I will likely not keep many of my dogs in tact. I hope to train some of my offspring to be assistance dogs for the disabled, or search and rescue dogs. So the CoKC Simply works best for my kennel.

Do I think everyone should leave the AKC? Absolutely not! Isolated strains are important and not to be overlooked. Kennels like the Alaskan Kennel of the Norris Family and the Stead's have been doing great things with their Siberians and should continue to do so in the registry that suites them best.
