As a novice in the world of purebred dogs, my attention was caught by The
Siberian Husky Club of America around age 13. I was alarmed and upset when I
first read "So.... you want a Siberian Husky". It would seem, that for a parent
club that was supposed to be dedicated to the well being of the breed, the club
had a childish,... and rather exclusive feel to their warnings.....
It was as if the parent club had excluded the average owner of a Siberian, to be
owning no more than a time-bomb ready to strike out at the very mention of
freedom. It is expressed in this fascist pamphlet, that Siberians are not
capable of being trained beyond their habits,... I feel that this
pamphlet may have sent the new owner of many young Siberians running for the
nearest humane shelter screaming "please take my monster". I personally think
that all of the hardships that you may encounter,... as with all young
animals,... can be overcome with time and patience,... to produce a sound and
reliable animal.
The views expressed by this so called "Parent Club", prove to be rather
anti-evolutionary in practice............
Are we to believe that a dog will be unable to learn based solely on breed and
tendencies? Are we to believe that our breed should be one sided and only
functional in one way? Here we will look at some common stereotypes of the
Siberian Husky,... and how we all as owners and breeders can work together to
overcome these stereotypes that hold back the Siberian Husky as an evolving
breed.....
The fierce loyalty of a one man dog......... A
Watchdog.....
The Siberian Husky Club of America,
would have you believe that a Siberian Husky is incapable of being a watch dog
due to it's living arrangements in the arctic.....
It is true that the Chuckchi people were highly gregarious and community oriented, and that they often shared dogs and would lend out their dogs. This However I do not believe falls outside of the usual ideals of people who are and are not in our pack. A Siberian is a devoted dog, who would do anything to please his master this may include mock agitation, holding, and menacing.
Of course with a little bit of proper coaching and constant contact, a Siberian will be whole heartedly attached to you and a protective force against predators of all species. Do remember, that there are no bullet-proof dogs, so you must train your dog to be under your control at all times! To raise a dog with a secure bond to you, you must have time to be with your pet at least 8 hours a day. Keeping your dog on a lead at all times is a good tool for teaching him/her to stay close to you. A four foot lead works best to keep your dog underfoot when you are stationary. A 6 foot when in motion, and occasionally a 16 foot when in open space. beyond training your dog to stay close,... books on agitation training will help for security issues.
Here
at OnQ, we offer fully TRAINED Protection Dogs. These dogs are of sound
temperament and are impressive in their work. A Protection dog is a serious
responsibility, and not to be taken lightly.
The hairy truth about Siberians blowing
coat......
Yes folks, the Siberian Husky DOES shed...... Fortunately
though, our breed has the distinction of only shedding twice a year. Siberians
blow their coat all at one time, it can easily be combed out over a few
days,.... and no worries for 6 months to 1 year! What's even better is, this dense wool-like undercoat can
be made into yarn and knitted with.
Never Trust a Siberian off-leash........
This is the most cautioned of all warnings, especially
from the Colors of the Siberian website, and the Siberian Husky Club of America.
Yes indeed the Siberian does love to run. They also love to run in a circle, and
anywhere where you will let them. I suggest practicing caution when taking your
Siberian off-leash.... as with any dog.
With proper training, your dog will reliably come when called, and be able
to play lots of games with you. If you have problems with them off leash at
first the best idea is to lunge them like a horse in an open area in circles,
and use up to a 50ft leash to field train the dog to play games and ignore
distractions.
All but one of my dogs (who was abused) goes off leash and are very trustworthy,... I have no
reason to think that this is beyond the realm of reality for every Siberian.
A Siberian could very well be your Perfect
Dog.........
I am an advocate raising dogs inside, to be a part of the family no
matter what their other jobs might be.... after all,... who wants a dog you
can't stand to be around? If you have the time to spend with your Siberian, to
teach them, and have fun with them, they could be your perfect dog. If you are
always looking for someone to do something with,..... and everyone else says "no
thanks",.... a Siberian will always be up for something...
If you are looking for a dog that loves to visit your friends, enjoys constant
attention, and wants nothing more than to be with you every waking moment....
Then maybe, just maybe........
